Program Description

The Department of Music at Holy Cross offers courses in World Music, Jazz, and especially Balinese music within the context of a liberal arts music major.  Courses are open both to music majors and non-music majors.  A Gamelan Gong Kebyar is one of the distinct features of the program and was installed in 2001 with special grants from the Mellon and Luce Foundations.  Under the auspices of this program, we currently have a master Balinese artist in residence full-time, who offers courses in Gamelan, Balinese dance and music. In the past, the resident artists have included Professors Dibia, Desak Made Suarti Lakshmi, and currently Professor Bandem.  Each year, the department also invites guest artists from a variety of traditions.  In addition, some members of the department participate in College-wide programs, such as the new Montserrat freshman seminars, one of which will focus on religion and music in world traditions.  The music seminar is called "Hearing the Divine" and is taught by Shirish Korde.

A complete listing of course descriptions is available online.

In the fall of 2008, the Department of Music will be hosting two concerts of Indian music: Shubha Mudgal and Alif Laila at workshop/concerts.  There are several events that are being scheduled for the spring semester, including a two-day festival of sacred music from world traditions.
