Program Description

The newly established Bachelor of Arts in Music at Salem State College offers an integrated program that encompasses scholarship, technology and performance and offers several opportunities for students to study ethnomusicology.  MUS 470 Music and Culture is a required course for all music majors that serves as a capstone to the student's scholarly work in music.

Electives in ethnomusicology that are open to all students in the college include: MUS 112 Intro to World Music, MUS 320 History of Rock Music (Writing Intensive), and MUS 505 Seminar: Topics in Ethnomusicology.

Additional Resources

Performance opportunities in non-western music include MUS 185 World Music Ensemble (which currently focuses on the classical music of North India) as well as private lessons on sitar and tabla.

Consortia and Cross-Registration

Students at Salem State College can cross-register for courses through the Northeast Consortium of Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts.
